ABOUT KATHERINE

Katherine Stephens is a creator, collaborator, and community builder. She has dedicated her life and career to advocating on behalf of underserved people and finding creative solutions to improve lives. Katherine has an extensive background in community outreach, having built numerous programs that promote engagement, inclusion, and empowerment.

​

Her 1st term on the SCSD Board of Education include the following highlights:

  • Vice President, second and third year in office

  • Rising graduation rate for two years in a row

  • New York State School Board Association "Board Excellence Award" for the 2017-18, 2018-19, 2019-2020 school years

  • Updating policies to acknowledge not all students have the same family structure

  • Lobbied successfully for increased foundation aid 

  • Lowered the tax levy two years in a row

  • Graduation rate increased


Katherine works diligently to create new, creative opportunities for people and communities that face adversity. She has spearheaded successful programs in the arts such as linking Wildwood Programs students with disabilities to choreography and dance workshops with the cast of MOTOWN THE MUSICAL, bringing art therapy programs to adult ESL students with Refugee and Immigrant Support Services of Emmaus, and connecting Schenectady and Albany High School students with the touring cast of KINKY BOOTS to discuss gender and sexuality issues. Katherine is no stranger to public affairs, and shows no fear when diving in to fill gaps or tackle obstacles.

Katherine is wonderfully energetic, compassionate, and astute, and will continue to lead with courage, empathy, and a listening ear. She believes wholeheartedly that strong students build a strong community, and hopes to have the opportunity to continue to build a strong Schenectady.

​

Her other community leadership includes board membership with New Leaders Council Capital District Chapter, and YWCA of NorthEastern NY.


Katherine resides in the Stockade with her husband, Drew Pearson, and their cat, Poppy.
